Q: What were they protesting at the Boston Tea Party?

A: Taxation without representation! Like modern tax policy, there were a lot of in's and out's to British import taxes in the 1700's, and also like modern tax policy, benefits flowed to particular interest groups and companies (like the East India Company). The Boston Tea Party was not so much a protest against high taxes per se, as much as a movement about colonial rights. In the following years, many considered drinking tea to be unpatriotic, and coffee became more popular.
