Q: How do my local taxes help level the playing field for campaign finance?

A: In NYC, the small-dollar matching program allows candidates for local office (mayor, city council, comptroller, public advocate, borough president) to receive $6 in matching funds for every $1 donated to their campaign by an NYC resident, up to the first $175 given by an individual. So if you donate $100, it is worth $700 to a campaign, as shown in the chart above. This encourages candidates to build support from an actual voter base (not just outside interests), and the program provides transparency and imposes spending limits and other criteria to qualify for the matching funds.
